Kyambogo University Announces Tuition Increase for 2024/2025 Academic Year
By Campus Eagle
Kyambogo University, one of Uganda’s leading public universities, has announced an increase in tuition fees for the 2024/2025 academic year. The decision, which has sparked mixed reactions among students and stakeholders, aims to address the rising operational costs and improve the quality of education and services provided by the institution.
The increase in the tuition comes after futail efforts by the university to amend the guild constitution where the administration faced paramount resistance from the 20th Guild House.
Details of the Increase
According to the university administration, the tuition fees will see a rise across various programs. This adjustment will affect both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with specific increments varying depending on the faculty and course requirements. The administration emphasized that the decision was not made lightly but was necessary to maintain the university's standards in light of economic pressures.
After the increment, the tuition paid will be constant every semester unlike the old fees structure where there was variation in the amounts paid per semester . Notably some courses like Architecture has been increased from 2.5 M to 4M
Reasons Behind the Increase
Prof. Elly Katunguka, the Vice-Chancellor of Kyambogo University, explained that the increase in tuition is driven by several factors:
1. Inflation: The rising cost of goods and services has significantly impacted the university's operational budget.
2. Infrastructure Development: The need for upgrading and expanding university facilities to accommodate a growing student population.
3. Quality Enhancement: Investments in modern teaching aids, research facilities, and academic staff development to ensure that students receive a world-class education.
Reactions
The announcement has elicited a range of responses from the student body. While some understand the rationale behind the increase, many express concerns about affordability and the financial strain it may place on their families.
The guild speaker Rt Hon Kayemba Muhammad asserted that the 20th guild won't tolerate any draconian policy , we are voted for by students and we are accountable to them.
“We acknowledge the university's need to improve and expand, but the abrupt increase in tuition fees poses a significant challenge for many students who are already struggling to meet their financial obligations." Said Ngolobe Wilberforce, the Minister of Information.
Despite the controversy surrounding the tuition increase, Kyambogo University remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality education and preparing students for the challenges of the modern world.
We are yet to hear from the Guild President HE Mwebesa Reagan .
Stay tuned
I appreciate the initiative by the management championed by Dr. katunguka but I don't think this is the best time because students are soon joining or resuming their studies in 3 weeks' time and this will be so abrupt for them.
ReplyDeleteGive it more time
We appreciate this move, but things are not clear at all. An article has been circulating about a past Guild President signing for that policy and a few minutes later, Mr Mwebesa comes out with a letter. I think he is trying to run away from the mess he created by himself. That is politics
ReplyDeleteIn a certain GRC session, he came at da floor of da house, and told us dat he was moving a policy about tuition (whereby a student would sit for a given no. of papers basing on da tuition paid), and apologized to the other GRCs for moving his policy without approval from the GRCs.
ReplyDeleteSo we no longer trust him as GRCs, and we want to impeach him
When Parliament proposed that the salary for security personnel shd be increased by 50% Kasaija said there's no money en deducted it to 15% but Kyambogo doesn't get a shamed to hike tuition by 50% my qtn is if at all da govt has no money who has da money?
ReplyDeleteThere motives for increment aren't bad but they shd consider families which are toiling to break chains of poverty through education plz..not every parent who brings a child at university is well off...
