STUDENTS OF KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY, SOROTI BRANCH GO ON STRIKE

Soroti, Uganda -  Students at Kyambogo University's Soroti branch have initiated a strike today in response to the ongoing lecturers' dispute over unpaid salaries. The campus has been gripped by tension as the standoff continues, prompting local authorities to take action.

Semester Start Delayed Due to Salary DisputeThe 2023 academic year at Kyambogo University Soroti Branch  commenced on August 7th, 2023. However, as of today, no lectures have been conducted. The reason behind this abrupt halt in academic activities is a payment dispute between the lecturers and the university administration .Lecturers at the Soroti branch assert that they have not received their salaries for the past three semesters, leading to a severe financial strain. Despite numerous attempts to engage with the university administration, they claim their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Students Take Matters Into Their Own Hands

Frustrated and concerned about their academic future, students decided to take matters into their own hands. Earlier this morning, they organized a peaceful demonstration within the university premises, demanding immediate resolution to the ongoing crisis.However, as tensions escalated and the demonstration grew in size, authorities took the decision to close the institution temporarily to ensure the safety of all students and staff members.

Police Intervention and Campus Closure

In response to the growing unrest, local law enforcement was called in to maintain order on campus. The closure of the institution has left hundreds of students uncertain about the fate of their ongoing semester and academic progress.

University Administration Responds

We reached out to the university administration for comment on the situation. While they acknowledge the ongoing financial challenges, they maintain that they are working diligently to resolve the payment dispute and restore normal academic activities as soon as possible.
